Breakthrough

Artists: Martina Babiarova, Eva Piskova, Ella Rozman, Mahry Yazliyeva

The art you see exhibited here has not been made by trained or professional artists in studios, though
you would not be able to tell.

It is the work of four International Baccalaureate students from the Prague British School. The students
were 16 years old when they began their course, studying art amongst five other subjects, and only one
of them had properly studied art before. Each piece they have selected for the exhibition presents a new
moment in their learning and a level in their development from two years of experiment, application and
refinement.

The students’ work is ambitious and mature in scale and approach. It was made in a school by teenage
school students, yet it is not confined to the standard educational barriers or categories of
painting/drawing/sculpture. Such labels almost have no meaning to these students, who share a clear
conviction that any materials are appropriate for art, when used with care and intelligence.

Perhaps most impressive is the depth of thought and conception behind these pieces. They are not
simply tributes to the styles and ideas of others; they aren’t repeats of already stale dialogues, or naïve
expressions of the artists’ youthful identity. They are serious, relevant and bear the marks of original and
resolved creativity.
